Coding with Scratch Summer Camp Inspires Young Programmers

A Week of Coding, Creativity, and Innovation



Young innovators explored the exciting world of computer programming during the Coding with Scratch Summer Camp at the South Jersey Innovation Center (SJIC).

Designed for both beginners and experienced coders, the camp grouped students according to their skill levels, ensuring every participant received instruction that matched their experience while continuing to build their confidence and technical abilities.

Using Scratch, a block-based visual programming language, campers discovered that learning to code can be both engaging and fun.

Beginner-Friendly Coding Projects



Students who were new to programming learned coding fundamentals through interactive, hands-on projects.

Activities included creating:

• Math quiz games
• Maze navigation challenges
• A classic Pong game

These projects introduced essential programming concepts while encouraging logical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving in an enjoyable learning environment.

 Advanced Challenges for Experienced Coders



Campers with prior coding experience tackled more advanced programming concepts through increasingly complex projects.

Students worked on:

• Building game platforms
• Creating point-scoring systems
• Designing hitboxes
• Improving game functionality
• Applying more advanced coding logic

These activities challenged students to strengthen their programming skills while gaining a deeper understanding of software development principles.
