Class Length: 1 Hour
Perfect for adults who are completely new to chess or have very limited experience.
Students will learn:
- Chessboard setup and coordinates
- Algebraic notation
- How each chess piece moves
- Essential rules, including castling and en passant
- Basic checkmate patterns
- Opening principles
- The three phases of a chess game:
- Opening
- Middlegame
- Endgame
Each class also includes time for casual games and social interaction with fellow students.
Adult Advanced Beginner
Class Length: 1 Hour
Designed for players who understand the basics and are ready to build stronger tactical and strategic skills.
Topics include:
- Pins
- Forks
- Discovered attacks
- Advanced checkmate patterns
- Defensive techniques
- Tactical combinations
- Positional improvement
Students continue learning through the Chess Steps Level 2 Workbook while enjoying friendly games during each class.
Bonus Opportunity: Students are encouraged to attend SJIC's FREE Adult Chess Club every Wednesday from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM for additional practice and casual play.
Adult Intermediate
Class Length: 1.5 Hours
Ideal for players preparing for tournament competition or looking to strengthen every aspect of their game.
Taught by FIDE Master Dov Gorman, this course focuses on:

Students are encouraged to participate in South Jersey Chess Club tournaments held on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons.
