Tournament Formats & Time Controls
Booster Tournaments
Designed for new tournament players, Booster Tournaments feature unrated games that help participants become comfortable with tournament rules, chess clocks, and competitive play.
- Held on the first Wednesday of each month
- Ideal for beginners and developing players
Scholastic Tournaments
Time Control: G|25 d5
Scholastic tournaments are designed for K–12 students and group players by grade or age. Students compete in a supportive environment while developing tournament experience.
Players learn:
- Tournament etiquette
- Strategic thinking
- Patience
- Calculation skills
- Game analysis using score sheets
Blitz Games
Time Controls: G|5, G|7, or G|10
Blitz chess is fast-paced and exciting, requiring players to think quickly while managing their clock.
These games emphasize:
- Pattern recognition
- Fast decision-making
- Tactical awareness
- Time management
Rapid Marathon
Time Control: G|10 d2
Rapid games give each player 10 minutes with a 2-second delay per move.
This format offers the perfect balance between thoughtful play and quick decision-making.
Classical Chess
Classical chess provides players with approximately 90 minutes or more to complete a game, allowing for deeper calculation and strategic planning.
Classical Quads
Time Control: G|60 d10
Players compete in small quad groups using longer time controls that encourage careful analysis and high-quality games.
Super Quads
Time Control: G|30 d5
Super Quads provide competitive rated games with moderate time controls, making them ideal for players looking to improve tournament performance while enjoying multiple games in one event.
