Beginner
Recommended For: Grades K+
Class Length: 1 Hour
Our Beginner class introduces students to the fundamentals of chess in a fun and supportive environment.
Students will learn:
- How each chess piece moves and captures
- Basic chess rules
- How to set up the board
- Opening fundamentals
- Checkmate patterns
- Basic tactics
- Draws and endgame concepts
- Good strategic habits from the very beginning
This level builds a strong foundation for future success while developing concentration, confidence, and critical thinking skills.
Advanced Beginner
Recommendation For: Grades K+
Class Length: 1 Hour
Students continue strengthening the skills learned in the Beginner program while developing a deeper understanding of strategy and tactical play.
Topics include:
- Stronger opening principles
- Tactical combinations
- Piece coordination
- Winning techniques
- Checkmate patterns
- Strategic decision-making
Students are encouraged to participate in SJIC's scholastic chess tournaments held twice each month on Sundays.
Intermediate
Recommended For: Grades 3–5 or USCF Rating 300–700
Class Length: 1 Hour
At the Intermediate level, students begin thinking several moves ahead while developing more advanced planning and analytical skills.
Students learn to:
- Create strategic game plans
- Identify targets and weaknesses
- Understand piece relationships
- Calculate multiple move variations
- Anticipate an opponent's response
- Develop stronger positional awareness
Tournament participation is encouraged to help students gain valuable competitive experience.
Advanced Intermediate
Recommended For: Grades 3–5 or USCF Rating 800–1100
Class Length: 1 Hour
Students expand their tactical knowledge while learning advanced strategic concepts that prepare them for elite-level competition.

- Blindfold visualization exercises

Students continue participating in SJIC scholastic tournaments to strengthen their competitive skills.
Elite
Recommended For: Grades 5+ or USCF Rating 1000+
Class Length: 1 Hour
Our Elite program is designed for highly motivated players working toward becoming advanced tournament competitors and future chess masters.
